The Empress´s mourning costume and jewellery

Following the remodelling of the Sisi Museum a number of highly valuable items of clothing and mourning jewellery once worn by Empress Elisabeth have been given a new and permanent place in the exhibition.

An Empress at play

Courtly “parlour games” are described in the literature, which begins around 1750, a term that refers not to a single game such as chess or draughts but as a generic term which included a whole repertoire of games. Even Empress Elisabeth “played”! From 24 June the Sisi Museum will be displaying a games case, the empress’s harp etc.

The Empress lingerie

Items of lingerie owned by Empress Elisabeth which have passed to the Schloss Schönbrunn Kultur- und Betriebsges.m.b.H. from the Klauda Collection will be displayed at the Sisi Museum from 1 April 2008. They include a pair of cream-coloured stockings, a cotton lawn camisole, a pair of drawers and a nightgown.

The Christmas Eve of the year 1837 was special in that it fell on a Sunday.
This in itself was not particularly unusual were it not for the fact that it was also the day Elisabeth, the future empress of Austria, was born.
