Bathroom

Bathroom

Beyond her dressing room is the empress's bathroom, which she had installed in 1876. She was the first member of the imperial family to have a bathroom in the modern sense of the word. The bathroom was restored in the autumn of 2002 and was opened to the public for the first time.

In order to preserve the authentic appearance of the room, the original fabric wall hangings, which also date to the 1880s, were carefully cleaned, with only one small, completely faded section behind the stove being replaced with a reproduction. This shows that the wall covering originally had a very striking, intensely colourful pattern of large, peony-like blossoms and buds, ranging from cream and rose to bright pink and cerise. A further noteworthy feature is the original linoleum floor, which was laid after 1883 and is contemporaneous with the wall hangings.

On the left is the original bathtub of galvanised sheet copper.
