Flight

Elisabeth’s reaction to the constraints of the Viennese court is to take refuge in the cult of her own beauty, obsessive dieting and sporting manias.

As she grows older, and especially after the tragic suicide of her only son, Rudolf, in 1889, Elisabeth grows increasingly bitter, becoming even more withdrawn, unsociable and unapproachable. She takes to wearing black, and most people experience Elisabeth from now on as a black silhouette in the distance. Fans, veils and parasols become the indispensable accessories of the empress.
