The painting at the centre shows Emperor Franz Joseph at the age of twenty-three, in the year of his marriage. The painting on the wall to the left of the Large Salon shows Archduchess Maria Annunziata, the wife of Karl Ludwig, a brother of Franz Joseph.
Maria Annunziata was the mother of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne, who was assassinated together with his wife, Sophie von Hohenberg, in Sarajevo in 1914, the event that triggered the First World War.
